Teenagers today are experiencing unprecedented changes in their sleep patterns due to social media use. Studies show that the average teen spends over three hours on social media before bedtime, significantly impacting their sleep quality and duration. While experts recommend 8-10 hours of sleep for adolescents, many get only 6-7 hours on school nights.

The problem isn’t just about time spent online – it’s also about how social media affects the brain. The constant stream of notifications, likes, and messages triggers dopamine releases, making it harder for teens to wind down. Additionally, the blue light emitted by screens interferes with the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.

Research indicates that teens who use social media intensively before bedtime take 30 minutes longer to fall asleep compared to those who don’t. They also report lower quality sleep and increased daytime fatigue. This affects not only their academic performance but also their physical and mental well-being.

Some schools have started addressing this issue by implementing “digital sunset” programs, where students commit to staying offline for at least two hours before bedtime. Early results show improved sleep patterns and better classroom engagement among participating students.

Sleep experts recommend creating a “social media curfew” – a fixed time each evening when devices are turned off. They also suggest keeping phones out of bedrooms and using built-in screen time limits. Morning exposure to natural light and regular exercise can help reset disrupted sleep cycles.
