Modalverben haben Ersatzformen! Diese werden vor allem benötigt, wenn man sie im simple past benutzen möchte, da Modalverben an sich nicht in ihrer Form verändert werden können!
Beispiel:
I must go to school –> ist das gleiche wie –> I have to go to school –> im simple past –> I had to go to school
I can drive a car –> ist das gleiche wie –> I am able to drive a car –> im simple past –> I was able to drive a car!
